Course Preparation Materials

Preparation: All participants and auditors should familiarize themselves with the basic bony anatomy of the hoof, pastern, and fetlock to include the coffin bone, short and long pastern bones, navicular bone, proximal sesamoid bones.

Soft tissues of prime importance include the superficial and deep digital flexor tendons, collateral ligaments of the coffin and pastern joints, the laminae, lateral (collateral) cartilages. Knowledge of the anatomical structures involved in the navicular apparatus (navicular bone, impar ligament, navicular bursa, the deep digital flexor tendon in the foot, suspensory ligament of the navicular bone) will be helpful for Session 4 Navicular Syndrome discussion especially.

There are many online sites with anatomy of the lower equine limb. Here are our favorites!

http://www.3dglasshorse.com/ - An engaging interactive exploration of the equine distal limb that combines interactive models with informative narrations and highly detailed animations. The interface allows manipulation of anatomical models in three dimensions.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGck-JnxutM&feature=channel_page - This animation video covers the distal limb is detail and is very similar to Glass Horse but is a video. If you don't own the Glass Horse Distal Limb, this is the next best thing.

www.ironfreehoof.com is a great site for anyone studying anatomy and will help you understand what you are seeing on x-rays. spending an hour or two on this fascinating site is highly recommended!

PARTICIPANT REGISTRATION

Participants are able to interact during the Q&A portions of the clinic, and are invited to send x-rays and photos in up to one week prior to the 1st Session for consideration in the Q&A. Please note that Registration is non-refundable unless the clinic is cancelled.
